Palmer Lake Elementary School family event showcases authors, poetry and art

Art in many forms was on display at Palmer Lake Elementary School’s recent Art, Authors and Harmony family event on Feb. 28. Four authors shared their stories in short sessions, and the evening also featured dinner, many examples of student art and poetry on display, free books, and opportunities for attendees to create art.

John Coy, Shannon Gibney and Sun Yung Shin are three of the four authors of the children’s book “Where we come from,” a pandemic-era book collaborated on virtually by authors of different ethnicities to explain their cultural origins and how they are all united despite those differences. Palmer Lake scholars wrote  "I Am From" poems in advance of the event and displayed them around the building, along with some other related activities such as a map where attendees could mark where they are from.

Bryan Skavnak, author and founder of Be the Nice Kid, also gave uplifting presentations to attendees, where he shared stories and inspiration in his message to value others, learn from mistakes, and to be kind above all.
